Camping Out on Holiday
Born in Leonora Michael Banks was raised in Nurra Kurramunoo (Mulga Queen) community, more than one thousand kilometres north-east of Perth in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Banks began painting at a very young age, learning under the guidance of his old people “in the bush school,” watching his old people, how they moved their brushes. As a young boy, Banks’ started out using charcoal from the fire as well as making boomerangs and spears. Later in life, Banks moved towards a figurative and Western-art painting style. Whilst he’s known for his haunting and ethereal self-portraits, he is most known for his saturated and vibrant landscapes. Often featuring rugged hills and flowing waterways in the background, and native vegetation and daily scenes of cultural life in the foreground. Using primarily acrylic and watercolour, Banks’ works’ capture the Country and scenes of “the old life” and culture of Nurra Kurramunoo. His works capture and communicate the deep love and connection he had to his home Country and people.
Revealed 2025 wishes to acknowledge Michael Banks for his contribution to Revealed and the broader arts scene in Western Australia. Care and thoughts to those who held him close.
